Portfolio > Wrought iron work
O2 Landscapes specialises in custom-designed wrought iron garden features. Wrought iron is a particularly interest material to work with, due to its malleability, strength and character. As an art form, it reached amazing heights at the beginning of the 20th Century, with the work of such Art Nouveau architects as Victor Horta, Hector Guimard and Josep Maria Jujol. Its malleability enabled the representation of remarkable organic forms, which would be unachievable or unfeasible in other materials. The expression of such forms is also well-suited to postmodernist aesthetics/architecture, such as in the experimental works of Charles Jencks (on his property in Scotland).
In my wrought iron designs, I aspire to the sensibility achieved in the work of the aforementioned architects, whilst adapting the art form to the context of contemporary gardens. Wrought iron is an exciting material to work with, because of its expressiveness. It is able to convey the feeling of natural processes, most significantly growth, but is also very suitable for more classical geometric designs. It should be pointed out here that what we commonly refer to as wrought iron is actually a combination of modern metalwork (using steel, not iron) and traditional forging methods. The following works were designed for a range of purposes; climbing stands, a pergola, a clothesline and as partitions for an entry space.
